Projects

(European Project, FP7-ICT-2011-8, 2013-2015)
Home: http://www.newsreader-project.eu/

The volume of news data is enormous and expanding, covering billions of archived documents and millions of documents as daily streams, while at the same time getting more and more interconnected with knowledge provided elsewhere. Professional decision-makers that need to respond quickly to new developments and knowledge or that need to explain these developments on the basis of the past are faced with the problem that current solutions for consulting these archives and streams no longer work, simply because there are too many possibly relevant and partially overlapping documents and they still need to distinguish the correct from the wrong, the new from the old, the actual from the out-of-date by reading the content and maintaining a record in memory. Consequently, it becomes almost impossible to make well-informed decisions and professionals risk to be held liable for decisions based on incomplete, inaccurate and out-of-date information.
NewsReader will process news in 4 different languages when it comes in. It will extract what happened to whom, when and where, removing duplication, complementing information, registering inconsistencies and keeping track of the original sources. Any new information is integrated with the past, distinguishing the new from the old and unfolding story lines in a similar way as people tend to remember the past and access knowledge and information. The difference being that NewsReader can provide access to all original sources and will not forget any details. We will develop a decision-support tool that allows professional decision-makers to explore these story lines using visual interfaces and interactions to exploit their explanatory power and their systematic structural implications. Likewise, NewsReader can make predictions from the past on future events or explain new events and developments through the past. The tool will be tested by professional decision makers in the financial and economic area.

The overall goal of PESCaDO is to research and develop strategies for user-centred environmental service orchestration and multilingual information delivery. The strategies, realized as an operational workbench, will support the user during the entire process of decision-making – from the formulation of the problem, via the search for adequate environmental service nodes and their connection (including data, knowledge and language synchronization), up to multilingual information, advice, hints, etc. delivery. The workbench will adapt to the language preferences and the profile and the needs of the user. Furthermore, it will allow for intervention and feedback at any stage of the process, incorporate the received feedback and facilitate several loops of the process.

Tools and Ontologies

Tools

The Modelling WiKi
Home: http://moki.fbk.eu

MoKi is a tool that supports the the creation of articulated enterprise models through structured wiki pages. Moki enables heterogeneous teams of experts, with different knowledge engineering skills, to actively collaborate by inserting knowledge; transforming knowledge; and revising knowledge at different degrees of formality.

Scalable storage for text and RDF data
Home: http://knowledgestore.fbk.eu

Despite the widespread diffusion of structured data sources and the public acclaim of the Linked Open Data initiative, a preponderant amount of information remains nowadays available only in unstructured form, both on the Web and within organizations. While different in form, structured and unstructured contents speak about the very same entities of the world, their properties and relations; still, frameworks for their seamless integration are lacking. The KnowledgeStore is a scalable, fault-tolerant, and Semantic Web grounded storage system to jointly store, manage, retrieve, and semantically query, both structured and unstructured data. The KnowledgeStore plays a central role in the NewsReader EU project: it stores all contents that have to be processed and produced in order to extract knowledge from news, and it provides a shared data space through which NewsReader components cooperate.

An Extensible Tool for Building Stream-Oriented RDF Processing Pipelines
Home: http://rdfpro.fbk.eu

RDFpro (RDF Processor) is a public domain, Java command line tool and library for RDF processing. RDFpro offers a suite of stream-oriented, highly optimized RDF processors for common tasks that can be assembled in complex pipelines to efficiently process RDF data in one or more passes. RDFpro originated from the need of a tool supporting typical Linked Data integration tasks, involving dataset sizes up to few billions triples.

A Suite for Extracting Knowledge from Text
Home: http://pikes.fbk.eu/

PIKES is a Knowledge Extraction framework adopting a 2-phase approach. First (phase 1: linguistic feature extraction), an RDF graph of mentions is built by distilling the output of several state-of-the-art NLP tools for tokenization, part-of-speech tagging, lemmatization, named entity recognition and classification, temporal expression recognition and normalization, parsing, coreference resolution, word sense disambiguation, entity linking, and semantic role labelling. Then (phase 2: knowledge distillation), the mention graph is processed to distill, using SPARQL-like mapping rules, a knowledge graph representing the content conveyed by the text.

Knowledge Extraction for Information Retrieval
Home: http://pikes.fbk.eu/ke4ir.html

Video recording of KE4IR presentation at ESWC2016 (videolectures.net)

Document retrieval is the task of returning relevant textual resources for a given user query. KE4IR is an approach that improves the performances of the traditional term-based similarity solution by performing a semantic analysis of the query and the documents, obtained exploiting a state-of-the-art Knowledge Extraction tool (PIKES) and Semantic Web resources (e.g., YAGO, DBpedia).

A Latex-Style Syntax for authoring OWL 2 ontologies
Home: https://github.com/dkmfbk/TexOwl

TeX-OWL is a new syntax that can be used to write OWL 2 ontologies. It was developed to address the need for an easy-to-read and easy-to-write plain text syntax. TeX-OWL is inspired by LaTeX syntax, and covers all construct of OWL 2. We designed TeX-OWL to be less verbose than the other OWL syntaxes, and easy-to-use especially for quickly developing small-size ontologies with just a text editor. An OWLAPI-based Java parser and writer is available to easily convert TeX-OWL to/from other OWL2 syntaxes.

Ontologies

The BPMN Ontology
Home: https://dkm.fbk.eu/index.php/BPMN_Ontology
Mirros: Ontohub - Local

The BPMN Ontology is a formalization in OWL-DL of the structural components of the Business Process Modelling Notation (BPMN), based on the latest stable BPMN specifications from OMG [BPMN Version 1.1 - January 2008]. The development of the ontology was guided by the description of the complete set of BPMN Element Attributes and Types contained in Annex B of the BPMN specifications.

The PESCaDO Ontology
Home: http://pescado-project.eu/ontology.php
Mirros: Ontohub - Local

The PESCaDO Ontology is a modular ontology capable of representing all the content processed and produced by an environmental decision support to provide user-tailored environmental decision support. It covers environmental information such as meteorological conditions and phenomena, air quality, and pollen, as well as other relevant environment-related information essential for a targeted user-tailored service: travel and traffic information, human diseases, geographical data, monitoring station details, user profile details, etc. In addition, the KB is also capable of formally representing the description of the user's inquiry to the decision support system, and the possible conclusions (warnings, recommendations, etc) that the system may produce for a given inquiry. The ontology is codified in the standard semantic web ontology language OWL.

The Event and Situation Ontology (ESO)
Home: https://github.com/newsreader/eso

The Event and Situation Ontology (ESO) is a resource which formalizes the pre and post conditions of events and the roles of the entities affected by an event. The ontology reuses and maps across existing resources such as Wordnet, SUMO and Framenet and is designed for extracting information from text that otherwise would have been implicit.

Predicate Model for Ontologies
Home: https://premon.fbk.eu/

PreMOn (Predicate Model for Ontologies) is a linguistic Linked Data resource representing predicate models such as PropBank, NomBank, VerbNet and FrameNet. PreMOn consists of an OWL ontology for modelling predicates with their arguments, selectional constraints, relations and alignments, based on lemon (Lexicon Model for Ontologies); and of a set of RDF datasets for the main predicate models described using this ontology.

Teaching

Language Resources and Ontologies (together with Dr. Sara Tonelli)
Where: Filosofia e linguaggi della modernità, Università di Trento
When: 2012 - 2013

The performance of HLT systems crucially depends on the quality and quantity of training data - in particular annotated data - and of the resources they have access to, including lexical resources such as WordNet or domain ontologies. This module provides students with the knowledge required to use existing resources and create new ones. Topics of the module include: creation and annotation of corpora; lexical resources and machine readable dictionaries, especially WordNet; and ontologies, covering theoretical underpinnings, upper ontologies such as DOLCE, and domain ontologies.
